Rabbit - (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

Adult 40 cm long, weight 1.2-2kg.

Life Style

The rabbit is widespread in western Europe. It lives communally in a system of burrows known as a warren. The male (buck) and female (doe) breed from January to July but early litters do not survive well in cold wet conditions. Females start to breed when aged 3-4 months with a gestation period of one month. An average litter size is 5, with up to 5 litters per year. The young are born in the main warren or in a breeding stop (an independent tunnel built away from the main warren). The female seals the entrance to the stop with soil and will visit once a day to suckle her offspring which are weaned at 3-4 weeks old.

Pest Factor

It is the legal obligation of an occupier of land to control rabbits. Damage resulting from digging can undermine embankments and structures resulting in collapse. Rabbits cause damage to amenity land, such as bowling greens and cricket pitches. They also ruin crops, grasslands and garden plants.

Springtails - (order collembola)

Adult 2-5mm very small with specialist organ for springing.

Life Cycle

Egg - nymph - adult

Life Style

Insect found in damp kitchens, pot plant and compost. Feeds on compost and moulds. Can jump using specialist spring organ, can live for up to 1 year.

Pest Factor

Minimal, only in damp conditions.

Silverfish - (lepisma saccharina)

Adult 20mm silver grey wingless insect.

Life Cycle

Egg - nymph - adult

Life Style

Nocturnal insect found in damp conditions common in bathrooms and kitchens. Silverfish have an interesting mating ritual. The male spins a web of silk thread ejecting a blob of semen at the bottom of one of the strand; he then encourages the female by pushing her towards the globule. He holds the thread taut so she makes contact with the semen, which is then absorbed into her body.

Pest Factor

Can damage manuscripts, textiles and dried foods.
